About me and my practice

In my private counselling practice, where I work either face to face or online, I routinely use psycho-education to help clients heal past trauma, giving them skills to manage and regulate their problematic emotional states.

For the past twenty years, I have been involved in counselling young people and adults in various settings, including schools, training centres, careers offices, youth clubs, prisons, and for Relate.

I believe that its one thing to survive, but another to succeed and to be the person that you know in your heart you always had the potential to be. I am genuinely passionate about supporting people on their journey through life and helping them find techniques and coping mechanisms to enable them to progress on their journey towards a better state of being.

Our counselling relationship is one built on my own passionate drive to help other people live the life of their dreams and to resolve the emotional issues that have been holding them back. Counselling can give you the time and space to explore your inner world and what is holding you back. Isnt it time to discover your own truth and what you can truly achieve in life?

Life can be tough, but it doesnt have to be. Bringing my years of experience and expertise to the vulnerabilities that are holding you back, lets together work on empowering you to build the life of your dreams.

Experience

I have over twenty years of experience within counselling. In working in prisons I helped clients to process the underlying reasons for their actions that led them to be incarcerated. Working through their issues around shame and developing new coping strategies to re-engage with the outside world was a profoundly rewarding experience.

In working in both the local careers office and government community projects I helped in supporting school leavers seek, secure and maintain employment through helping them develop their interpersonal skills and addressing various mental health issues.

At Relate I helped young people deal with issues around divorce and separation leading to family breakdown. I have always taken a systemic approach to working with individuals in relation to family dynamics.

As a foster carer I had a unique opportunity to focus my skills on one individual for 7 years, coupled with my experience of bringing up my own two children. In this role I worked with various attachment issues, loss, grief and childhood abuse, so prevalent with children in the care system. This intense and sometimes overwhelming experience as a foster carer taught me the value of being consistently and totally present with others in their suffering whilst holding a safe space for them, which is structured and with appropriate boundaries.

In social care I assessed and created support packages for troubled families to support parents and their children.

I have worked with many individual clients on a daily basis with complex mental health needs such as Complex PTSD, PTSD, different types of addiction, anxiety and depression and various childhood traumas that have impacted negatively on the quality of my clients life.

Additional Information

Recognising that we are all on a powerful journey to improve our lives is central to my practice. This process is never completed and its important to understand that this is okay. We all need to learn to ride the waves of life instead of resisting them. In supporting each other and treating each other as human beings with complex needs we all grow and learn. Relationships are a part of the healing process.

My role and something I continually strive towards is to build meaningful relationships with my clients. Relationship is the foundation of what I do. So many people with complex traumas for instance, are, through counselling, coming to understand that trauma can be treated like any other ailment or physical wound. Trauma can in fact create pains in the physical body that we have never experienced before. Building relationships is a part of the educational process in enabling clients to gain a better understanding of their problems, but how they might be managed or resolved.
